  • Going Downtown.
  • Shoe Store.
  • Shoes
  • The White Sales Clerk.
  • Martin always had a resentment towards the system ofsegregation and felt that it was a grave injustice. He remembers a trip to adowntown shoe store with his Father when he was still small.
  • The Discussion.
  • Martin and his father entered the shoe shop to buy shoes. They sat down in thefirst empty seats at the front of the store.
  • Martin's Dad's Reaction.
  • A young white clerk came up and murmured politely: "I'll be happy to wait onyou if you'll just move to those seats in the rear."
  • Not Accepting The System.
  • Shoes
  • Martin's Dad immediately retorted, "There's nothing wrong with these seats. We're quite comfortable here." "Sorry," said theclerk, "but you'll have to move."
  • ''We'll either buy shoes sitting here," Martin's father said, "or we won't buy shoes at all." Where upon he took Martin by the hand and walked out of the store. This was the first time Martin had seen his Dad so furious.
  •  That experience revealed to Martin at a very early age that his father had not adjusted to the system, and he played a great part in shaping Martin's conscience. His Dad said to hi "I don't care how longI have to live with this system, I will never accept it."
