Beowulf asked Wiglaf to get his treasure because he wanted to see them before he died.
Wiglaf returns to a dying Beowulf with his treasures. He tells Wiglaf to lead the people of Geats.
Before Beowulf dies he gives Wiglaf his golden necklace, his gold-covered helmet, and his rings, along with his mail shirt. Wiglaf was now the King of Geats.

Once the word of Beowulf's death gets to the men who left, they return to mourn. Wiglaf and seven other men went to get the last of Beowulf's treasures he won from the dragon.
