The morning after Kiowas death, Jimmy cross led the men into the mud of sewage to search for his body. He decides to write a letter to Kiowa's father saying what a good soldier he was. Azar began making jokes and Jimmy cross began blaming himself for making the wrong decision in sending his men onto the field causing Kiowa's death.
After searching hours in the field, the men find his body wedged between a layer of mud. Azar sees the body and immediately apologizes for the jokes he made.
Cross is still in the mud thinking about his letter to Kiowa's father. Going over the revisions in his head, he floats in the muck thinking about whether he would send the letter after the war or just play golf instead.
