August Pullman is a normal 10-year-old with a not-so-normal condition: a craniofacial deformity. He has had countless surgeries to try to fix his face. He has been homeschooled his entire life, but when school is coming around, his parents decide to enroll him.
Before school starts, Auggie and his parents go to the school to have him introduced to the area by three volunteers: Jack, Charlotte, and Julian.
Auggie starts the year sitting by himself during lunch until one day, a girl named Summer sits with him out of pity. They quickly become friends. Not soon later, Auggie and Jack also become friends.
On Halloween, Auggie finds Jack with Julian and other friends talking about him behind his back and is greatly hurt. He ices him out and doesn't talk to him afterward. They eventually make up though.
On a nature camp trip, Auggie and Jack go into the woods to pee, and they encounter a group of troublesome 7th graders. They physically and verbally assault Auggie, and he scrapes his elbow badly and looses his hearing aids. Julian's friends fend them off, and they bond together.
At the end of the year, everyone accepts Auggie and no one really judges him anymore. At the end of the year, he wins an award for best student.
