  • They ought to put you in a mad house till you're cured of your crazy nonsense!
  • I'm living in America! You made the lives of the other children! I'm going to make my own life! Pg.138
  • I'm not from the old country, I'm American!
  • Sarah is upset and confused with her mother, she believes that her father's ways are old and wrong. In this point of the story Sarah is trying to open her mothers eyes to the new world.In the old world the father makes the rules and the kids and mother follow whatever he says, but in the new world they can stick up for themselves.
  • All I could feel was the hurt of his beating me down. Just as I looked to father for love, he rose up to stone me. pg.204
  • How could any man love a lawless, conscienceless thing like you?
  • Sarah realizes that in america women can stand up for themselves and don't need a man to be happy. In this point of the story Sarah is arguing with her father to leave for new York, fathers old ways want her to stay home, but Sarah wants to make a new life for herself .

  • father learns that Sarah refused Max's proposal he is upset. Sarah tries to explain why she did, but fathers old ways say that a man will never love a women who ran away from home. Sarah's new ways make her want to marry someone she truly loves.
  • Sarah finally realizes that her father is too stuck in his old ways. She knows there is no use in talking to him. He believes since he has lived longer and been through more he knows whats best for her, but Sarah wants to learn on her own.
  • In the end Sarah realizes no matter how hard she tries she can not escape her fathers old ways. When she goes back to visit him, she sees he is dying and the other thing he knows is his old traditions, the only way to have her father live on was to keep those traditions alive even though they go against her new world thinking.
