  • This is Frederick Douglass. He is an African American slave. He was born around 1818. He only sees his mother at night time.Douglass grow up without a mother, unloved, cold, and hungry. Douglass and his mother got separated when Douglass was a baby.
  • Climax
  • Douglass finds out he is a slave for the rest of his life. He is very unhappy and angry. He gets placed in a bad plantation. His slave master is very cruel. He has to work day and night. Small allowances each year. Can’t get to learn to read and write. No freedom.
  • Falling Action
  • Douglass is transferred to the family of Hugh Auld in Baltimore. Where he learns to read by his masters wife. Douglass learns there is nothing good in slavery. His master tells his wife she is going to have to be more cruel and uncaring to Douglass. His master tells his wife that after he finds out she is teaching Douglass how to read.
  • Resolution
  • Douglass fights with Edward Covey for 2 hours. Douglass starts to gain some self-respect and desire for freedom. He stands up for himself. He fights back his cruel slave master. Douglass gains higher knowledge about strength.
  • Douglass tries to escape Mr.Freeland. He fails and gets back with Hugh Auld in Baltimore. After getting back with Hugh Auld he works as a ship caulker. Earns a bit of money. Douglass hopes he can try to escape for the second time.
  • In 1838 he finally escapes and goes to New York City. Marries a free woman. Starts his life as a free man. Starts to enjoy what life is all about with his wife next to him. Douglass went from a slave to a free man with a wife and freedom.
