Storyboard Text

  • Teacher Smith has students in groups of 4 working on an antomy lab assignment.
  • I can't stand my lab partners and want to punch them in the face!
  • Strategy #1: Teacher Smith reacts quickly and directly in an effort to diffuse the situation, and goes over the rules of the classroom. She speaks in a calm voice to Aaron to try to get him to calm down.
  • My lab partners are horrible people and I don't want to work with them.
  •
  • Strategy #2:Teacher Smith asks Aaron to walk into the hallway with her so that he can cool down and talk about the situation that just occured.
  • Fine, I just want to get away from them.
  •
  • When the teacher asks how the assignment is going, Aaron gets very angry and shows aggressive behavior towards his fellow classmates, and throws a book to the floor.
  • Strategy 3: Teacher Smith walks with Aaron into the hallway where she asks him to tell her what happened in the classroom and listens without interjecting.
  • My lab partners think I am stupid. I lost my temper.
  • Aaron, I would like to hear from you what happened in the classroom.
  • Aaron does not calm down and refuses to listen to what Teacher Smith is saying. His anger increases and he begins to shout at his classmates.
  • Strategy 4: After Aaron finishes telling Teacher Smith what happened, Teacher Smith identifies Aaron's feelings and wants.
  • Am I right that you are feeling angry, unliked, and misunderstood?
  • Aaron agrees to walk out into the hallway with Teacher Smith.
  • Strategy 5: Teacher Smith tells Aaron that she understands why he got upset, and lost his temper. They talk about what they would like the outcome of the situation to be.
  • Aaron tells Teacher Smith that his lab partners do not include him in their discussions, and think that he is stupid because his English is not very good sometimes. He has overheard them making fun of him and he couldn't take it any longer.
  • Aaron begins to calm down after Teacher Smith says she understands why he got upset. She also tells him that he can't exhibit aggressive behavior towards other students because it is threatening toward them and that is not acceptable.
  • Aaron and Teacher Smith agree on a few goals to prevent a situation from occuring like this again.  #1-Aaron will be assigned to another lab group, #2-Aaron will come talk to Teacher Smith to let her know abut student issues that are going on, and #3-Teacher Smith with talk to the entire class about respecting others.
  • I understand why you feel angry and lost your temper. Let's agree on ways to make this better.
