Storyboard Text

  • Hi, I am Dorothea Dix and I want to help you with your debt problem
  • 18.3 The Prison Reform 1841
  • I have visited many prison and jails and the conditions were terrible.
  • Please help me free the innocent people.
  • The prison reform movement helped debtors, the mentally ill and many more problems about the conditions.
  • Sure. What can I do?
  • Children were in prison just for minor theft. Debtors were only 20 dollars in dept and couldn't pay it off because they were in jail. They were also chained to the floor.
  • Many asylums were overflowing with people so they were put in jails or prisons. In jails the mentally ill were whipped when they misbehaved.
  • So I spoke up to try and explain myself. With help of many people and my experiences they helped me free the debtors and mentally ill.
  • Today there is way less people in jails. Also the conditions are not as bad. If they have an illness they are is asylums and not whipped, they can get the help they need. Deports can't be put in jail for being 20 dollars in dept.
  • Now that I have passed, I hope that people will still fight for better rights in jails and prisons.
