Mary Mackillop was born on the 15 January 1842. Her parents moved from Scotland to Melbourne before they had her. She had 7 siblings, 4 brothers and 3 sisters. When she was about nine, her dad went away to Scotland to help out a friend.
Since her father left, her family was struggling with money and her mother couldn't get a job because she was looking after all of her kids, so when Mary Mackillop was about 22, she left home to work as a governess for her Aunt and uncles children. One day when she was teaching her cousins, she spotted a child in ragged clothing hiding behind a bush, listening to her lesson. She invited the child up to learn with them because the childs parent couldn't afford school.
With the help of her new friend Father Tenison-Woods, Mary opened up her first school in 1866 in an old stable.
Mary took her vows to become a sister of saint Joseph
