  • Schaffer and Emerson: The four stages of attachment
  • Indiscrininate attachment
  • Babies produce the same types of responses between objects and people Have no preferences with people Rapidly learn to discriminate familiar people from unfamiliar people
  • Specific attachments
  • Babies become more socially able and can tell people apart. Have a preference for people over objects Normally do not show fear of strangers or seperation anxiety Do not show a preference for specific people- Their behaviour is indiscriminate because it is not shown to be any different for any specific person.
  • Multiple attachments
  • Around 7 months of age Show seperation anxiety and stranger anxiety Formed a specifc, primary attachment to one particular individual (the person that best understands their signals) Use familiar adults as a secure base
  • I want mum, who is this stranger? :(
  • Follow soon after the first attachment is made Show attachment behaviours towards several people eg: siblings, grandparents, childminders By 18 months of age Fear of strangers response starts to weaken
