Storyboard Text

  • Starr and her best friend Khalil were pulled over by the cops on their way home from a party. When Khalil asks why they were pulled over, he was told to step out of the car and not to move. Khalil decides to move to make sure Starr is okay when he is shot unarmed by the police officer, three times in the back. The officer continues to point the gun at Starr until backup arrives.
  • After the tragedy, Starr wants to stay quiet and is reluctant to speak up. She is afraid of what would happen to her if her name gets out as the witness. Despite her fears, she decides to give her statement to the police about what happened that night.
  • Starr is at the police station giving her statement
  • When Kenya(Starr's friend and her brothers sister) finds out that Starr is the witness to Khalils death, she calls her out for not speaking up more on his behalf and for acting as though she is ashamed of her ties to Garden Heights. This causes Starr to create a Tumblr account in Khalil's honor. It shows photographs and stories about Khalil that contradict the image the media is painting of him.
  • Starr is working at her dads store
  • Starr meets with the DA to answer questions about Khalil's death. When she is asked to go into detail about the shooting, Starr vomits. A few weeks later Starr is asked to do an interview with the news anchor Dianne Carey, her identity would still be kept a secret. Starr was warned not go into detail, but decides to tell the world the truth, despite threats. Starr ends up dry snitching on the biggest drug dealer in town to clear Khalil's name. She begins to realize speaking out is the way she can fight for justice, and being silent won't help to change anything.
  • the interview
  • Starr speaks in front of the grand jury in hopes of getting justice for Khalil, by convicting the police officer who murdered him.
  • When the Grand Jury decided not to indict the officer who killed Khalil, Starr decides she wants to protest. From the top of the police car, Starr speaks passionately to the crowd about the wrongness of Khalil’s death and how she was a witness. Starr makes a promise to Khalil that she won’t remain silent, and will continue fighting against injustice. This is a major change from the beginning of the book from when she was first afraid to let her voice to be heard. She now won't stop at anything until a change is made.
