The story of the modernization of Russia starts off with a war. The Crimean war which the Russian empire lost to the alliance of France, Britain and the Ottoman Empire.
Serfdom was abolished in 1861 by Alexander II.
Alexander II was assassinated in 1881 near the city of Saint Petersburg, Russia.

A revolution in 1905 by Father Gapon caused a small-scale revolt which was quickly put down by leaders earned the name bloody sunday because of the bloodshed.
Following the revolution of 1905 in Russia, Tsar Nicholas II promised reforms in the government with the October Manifesto. The Fundamental Laws formalised a new system of monarchy.
Sergei Witte was a Russian leader who was helpful in settling the people after the revolts of 1905.
