  • men came home drunk, which lead to abuse in the house. 
  • Schools were male dominant and taught by untrained men, schools were not up kept. 
  • Mentally ill were put in prisons, often targets of abuse, seen as ill or possessed. 
  • I, a Washingtonian, see alcohol as a disease, and I try to help drinkers. 
  • I have joined the temprance movement and apologize for my slow productivity, and abuse at home
  • Girls and boys, Horace Mann, is the reason we all here. He advocated for equal education, and professional teachers, and said US future depended on it. 
  • Dorothea Dix reformed abuse of mentally ill, although they were not treated well in asylums, it was a big step in helping the mentally ill.
