The Ionians were Greeks, they lived along the coast of Turkey. They were defeated by the Persians. They asked the Athens and other Greek city-states for help, the Greeks sent ships full of weapons to the Ionians
How the Greece's attacked the Persians
Darius 1 was the king of Persia. He decided he wanted to conquer the Greeks in 490 BCE. He gathered a very strong and large army that outnumbered any Greek army anyone could get. The Persians had a lot more soldiers but they underestimated the Greeks fighting skills. The army of Athens killed around 6,000 of the Persians Only 192 Athen soldiers had gotten killed.
End of Persian War
10 years after the 1st attack in 480 BCE, the son of the Darius 1 or King Xerxes. Decided that he wanted to get revenge on Greece. He got a huge army with 200,000 soldiers and 1,000 warships.
The Greeks found out and decided to put together a small force. They asked the Sparta king Leonidas 1 they had 300 Spartans. They met the Persians at a narrow pass in the mountains called Thermopylae. The Greeks killed thousands of Persians but the Persians found a away around the mountains and got behind the Greeks. Spartans fought and killed many. The Persians did not win the war.
When the Persians thought they were going to win the war. They arrived at Athens and it was EMPTY. The Athens found out and went to a group of ships. But the Persian ships found the Athens and attacked them. The Athens were outnumbered. Athens won the war by sinking the Persians ships. Xerxes retreated back to Persia because they gave up
