King Eurystheues wants Heracles to kill a dangerous monster called a Lernaean Hydra. A Lernaean Hydra is a great swamp serpent with nine heads, one head is actually immortal. Its immortal head had such a dreadful poison that it infected the very air.
The whole region around it was deserted, for no one dared use the water from the springs near where it dwelt. Heracles took his twin brother's son named Iolaus with him not to fight against the Hydra but for the travel with him and to drive his chariot.
The two rode across the deserted country where neither men nor beasts could dwell until they came to the springs of the river which welled out beside the hydra's den. Here Heracles left Iolaus with the horses and himself stepped forward and sent a few arrows whizzing into the darkness of the cave.
He knew from the hissing within that he had roused the animal, and it slithered forward out of the rock, he sprang upon it and dashed his club on the nearest flickering head. The head dropped crushed and shapeless as the long neck went limp, but the beast came coiling forward, eight heads still darting venomously.
Heracles gave ground and lifted his club once more, but even as he did so, he saw the limp neck rouse again, and from its shattered end grew two new necks, and form each of these a head. Again he swung his club and again jumped back a pace, but once more grow whole again and became not one head, but two.
Then the hero was desperate, for he saw that against this monster
