  • Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States between 1861-1865. This was an important time in American history because it was the same time as the American Civil War.
  • The Southern states wanted independence from the North after Lincoln was elected. The main reason they wanted independence was because Lincoln had criticised slavery but many in the South wanted to keep slavery.
  • On 1st January, 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.It freed slaves in the Southern states. It paved the way for the 13th Amendment which would free all slaves in the United States a few years later.
