Andrew Jackson won the popular vote. John Q. Adams told Henry Clay to bribe people to vote for him so he would win.
1828- South Carolina Nullification
Increase in tax on raw materials, and lowered taxes on manufactured goods. The South didn't like the tax it because it increased the tax on imports. It favored the North.
1830- Worcester vs. Georgia
He gave more people the right to vote, he was known has the common man. He had friends that were known as the kitchen cabinet.
1836- Trail of Tears
In 1832 South Carolina put the nullification to the test, they voided the tariff, banned the collection of duties, and threatened to secede. John C. Calhoun said the tax was unconstitutional.
A missionary sued for being arrested because he was living with the Indians. Georgia had passed a law saying no white men could live with the indians. Federal government had treaties that said the Indians could have their own sovereign government.
The Cherokee did not want to relocate, in the fall of 1837 federal troops forced 16000 Indians to relocate. One quarter of them died on the Trail of Tears.
