1858:Illinois "House divided" Senate Speech
The House divided against itself cannot stand.
1860:Lincoln becomes the 16th President of the USA
"With malice toward none with charity for all, with firmness in the right as god gives us to see the right , let us strive on to finish the work we are in .
1860( Five weeks after the election): The South succeeds
If we can't have slavery than we will just leave
In the house divided speech Lincoln was debating about who wold win. Lincoln did not want slavery to spread and though slaves as equals. Douglas didn't want slavery and did not think of slaves as his equals.
In this speech he was hoping to make peace with the south with his words of wisdom and cause no type of war
WHen the southerns had lincoln as there president they thought that he would end slavery so they decided to leave the union.
