The founders of the Pony Express were three men named William Russell, Alexander Majors and William Waddell.
They created the pony express because as the American Civil War got closer, more and more people wanted to send mail.
The "mochila" or backpack was placed over both sides of the saddle while, the rider held it down with his weight.
The "cantina" or pockets is where the mail was placed for safe travel.
Riders like Billy rode in both the day and night.
However much like Billy, many riders bumped into Paiute Indians who were trouble!
