Montresor has always wanted to get revenge on Fortunato for insulting him he shows us this when he states " The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne1 as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge," (Poe, 1). He finds the perfect opportunity when he see's Fortunato is drunk at the Carnival.
'"Montresor lures Fortunato with a bottle of Amontillado by telling him "My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking today. But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado,9 and I have my doubts,'"(Poe, 5). Fortunato obviously gets excited and follows Montresor into his catacomb.
Fortunato has a really bad cough and the nitre that the walls are coated in make the cough a lot worse. Montresor tells Fortunato that they can turn around if the cough gets worse and that he can just ask Luchresi. By saying this it makes Fortunato aggravated and Fortunato continues to tell Montresor that Luchreshi isn't as good as him and they continue to go deeper in the catacomb.
)When they reach their destination to taste the Amontillado Fortunato realizes there is no bottle. Instead Montresor chains Fortunato to the wall. "From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock. Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it," ( Poe, 71).
Montresor started building a wall with bricks to lock Fortunato in. Fortunato thinks this is all a joke and is laughing and screaming. Eventually it stops and when Montresor realizes that Fortunato isn't responding he throws a torch in the empty space and in response all he hears is the jingling of the bells on Fortunato's hat.
Montresor has killed Fortunato finally getting the revenge he long ached for. I has been fifty years and no one has ever found out about Montresor's secret. In pace requiesca meaning rest in piece in French.
