The little girl's mother passed away and she was left with her father.
Later on the girl's father got married again and the woman had two beautiful daughters. But both of them treated the girl poorly.
Ashputtle got to go to the ball with a beautiful dress and the prince danced with her the whole night and the other two nights of the celebration but every time the prince wanted to found out where she came from, she would get away.
The King announced there was going to be a celebration in the castle to find a wife for his son. Ashputtle's step sisters were very excited about the celebration but Ashputtle couldn't go because she didn't have a nice dress or shoes.
Shake, shake, hazel tree gold and silver over me!
Ashputtle went to the hazel tree where her mother's grave was to cry. She said "shake, shake, hazel tree gold and silver over me. All the sudden a beautiful dress and gold shoes were brought to her by her friend the bird.
The prince found Ashputtle by making her try on the shoe that slipped off her foot when she was trying to escape the prince the third time. Soon they got married and lived happily ever after.
