A crowd in a small town units on a sunny June for the annually event hosted by Mr. Summers. Every head of the household must grab a slip of paper from the shabby box.
Tessie Hutchinson soon realizes her husband's paper has something on it. She then starts yelling how unfair is it because Mr. Summers didn't give Bill enough time to choose the paper he wanted.
The entire Hutchinson family, Bill, Tessie, Nancy, Bill Jr, and toddler Little Davy are all called up to the box by Mr. Summers. He slips in five papers into the box, including the one Bill selected.
The entire Hutchinson family draws a slip of paper from the box. They are all empty except for Tessie's, a black dot lays in the middle of the paper.
Tessie starts looking worried as the villagers begin to pick up the stones they gathers earlier in the day.
"It isn't fair, it isn't fair" Tessie yelled as a stone hit the side of her head. More people surrounded her and descend upon her with the stones.
