from the anger of the poverty her and her family live in, she decides to take her anger out on mrs.lottie's marigolds, after she has ruined the garden, she sees mrs.lottie staring back at her with a blank face, she is not mad anymore because there is nothing to be protected anymore. this marked the beginning of adulthood for lizabeth.
