Storyboard Text

  • That corpse just shuddered!
  • This is Mr. Hooper, a Reverend at a Puritan Church in 18th century Massachusetts. One morning, he came to the meetinghouse wearing a black veil. It immediately made everyone feel nervous, like he was looking right into their souls.
  • Then, farewell!
  • Never! It cannot be!
  • That afternoon, Mr. Hooper attended a funeral. His veil seemed more appropriate. He stepped into the room where the corpse was laid and bent over the coffin, as if to say his last goodbye. One witness claimed that when he did this, the corpse had slightly shuddered.
  • Amen!
  • Preach it!
  • Mr. Hooper was to officiate a wedding, but all the guests viewed his presence as "evil" or a "bad omen." At the wedding, he was taking a drink out of a glass of wine, but spit it out in disgust when he saw his own reflection.
  • Don't touch it!
  • Will you finally remove the veil?
  • Mr. Hooper's fiance, Elizabeth, tells him that she will leave him if he does not remove the veil and show her his face. He chooses to keep the veil on and lose his lover.
  • After a while, Mr. Hooper was perceived to have an intimate knowledge of sin, and became a famous and respected clergyman. Puritans came from far and wide to gaze at his figure.
  • Mr. Hooper spent the rest of his life being slightly feared and unloved, only wanted during hard times. When it was his turn to die, he was asked to finally remove his veil. He refused, and accused everyone of metaphorically wearing their own veils.
