  • "Then they all saw what they had not noticed before. There was a hole in the boat, near the front, right above the platform of loose boards that served as a floor."
  • The family was in a small boat in water that could kill you if you consumed it. If there is a hole in the boat that meant they will be sinking and could be facing death.

  • They are going on to see the birds, begins to sink into the terribly unhealthy water. The family faced death until a women filled the whole with her butt.

  • Symbolism
  • The Scarlet Ibis represent what your passion is. Christine was passionate for the birds, so she traveled far and worked hard to see the Scarlet Ibis birds. Her mission was to see the birds, and she would succeed at all costs. This act saved her marriage.
  • Internal Conflict
  • "Maybe the pressure he was under was her. Maybe she was a weight. Maybe he wanted her to lift up, blow away somewhere, like a kite, the children hanging on behind her in a long string"
  • Christine faces a deep internal conflict because she feels she is holding down Don and he does not want to be with her.
  • Sun represents Don. A sun gives off energy the same way Don gave of energy on his family.
  • Symbolism
  • Boat symbolizes the relationship between Christina and Don. It was sinking like their marriage. The boat and their relationship was repaired in the end.
