Just 7 minutes past midnight, our main protagonist, Christopher, finds Wellington, Mrs. Shears's black poodle dead in the front yard with a garden fork stuck into him.
Mrs. Shears calls the police and when the officers arrived they questioned the boy. The officers touched Christopher and he punched the officer to which the officer arrested him.
After being released from the police station, Christopher is determined to find out who killed Wellington.
Christopher begins to investigate Mrs. Shears's backyard which he trespassed. He finds out the garden fork was Mrs. Shears's. Mrs. Shears finds out and threatens to call the police. He left and Christopher's father gets mad at him and tells him to mind his own buisness and forget the dog situation.
After questioning the locals and receiving no useful evidence, he comes across Mrs. Alexander, a kind old lady, who tries to help him the best she could.
Later on, Mrs. Alexander meets Christopher unexpectantly and they go to the park although Christopher was reluctant around strangers. Mrs. Alexander told Christopher the truth about his Mother and Mr. Shears who is the prime suspect of Christopher's investigation.
