  • What have we done wrong? They're specifically targeting people like us!
  • Unlawful behavior! This is sexual deviancy!
  •  During this time persecution of gay people was still common. Same-sex dancing in public was prohibited and bars were banned from serving gay people alcoholic beverages. People could be charged with sexual deviancy for cross-dressing.
  • We will not take this injustice any longer! 
  • The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement.
  • The Stonewall riots promoted the first gay pride parades, in 1970. The same year, Marsha helped start the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), to advocate for young transgender people. In 1980, she was invited to ride in the lead car of New York's annual Gay Pride Parade.
  • I never thought a day of celebrating our community would come...
