  • When the Europeans came, the Native Americans that were in GA at the time were the Mississippians. They held religious and burial ceremonies and had good defenses like moats and palisades. They also had farming areas that were efficient. When the Europeans came, the natives were at a disadvantage in several areas. The Europeans brought over diseases, they had horses so they seemed like gods to the natives (which caused fear), and had better weapons/armor. Thousands of natives were killed directly or indirectly because of them.
  • The first European to discover Georgia was Hernando de Soto. The 3 main reasons why the Europeans explored the New World were: God, Gold, and Glory. God meant that the explorer countries wanted to convert the native to Christianity or escape religious persecution. Gold represented the wealth and treasure the countries wanted to find. Finally, Glory was for the land the countries wanted to obtain so they would be more powerful. The Europeans killed many Native Americans in Georgia. They wanted their land and food so they attacked. The relationship between most of the explorers and natives were not good ones.
  • Great Britain was the country that started to settle on the Atlantic shore of the United States. In order to have a flourishing colony, they should have a healthy relationship with the Native Americans to promote trade and prevent wars. Also, the colonists need good sanitation to stop the spread of disease and a well defended area. Something else a good colony needs is good hunting and farming. Georgia was a "buffer" colony. It was used as a barrier to keep the Spanish and French from attacking and taking over Britain's territory.
