In 1696 peter became the sole ruler of russia. He was russia's greatest reformer.
Peter was obsessed with modern tools and machines, especially ships. He belived russia's future depended on having a warm water port. So they can compete with the more modern Europeans.
Peter traveled west to learn about european culture and bring it to russia.
Peter wanted to change russia but he knew the people would not want to leave there accustomed ways. So peter increased his power as a absolute ruler. He reduced the power of the wealthy landowners and gave lower ranking families land. And modernized his army.
Peter wanted his people to learn about new cultures and get a better education he thought education was key to russia's future.
For education to thrive he wanted a seaport he fought Sweden for a whole 21 years to gain a piece of the Baltic coast. Sweden surrendered in 1703. He built st. Petersburg which became a very busy and successful port.
