  • Growing Tensions Between the Colonists and Britain

  • I need something to eat, prepare food for me.
  • The Stamp Act
  • All colonists will have to pay taxes on printed paper so we can pay our debt!
  • The colonists were happy to be apart of Britain. Britain and the colonists fought The French and Indian War. The war left Britain with huge debts.
  • The Boston Massacre
  • The Quartering Act is when British soldiers could come into colonists' houses or ask them for food, whenever they would like. The colonists were forced to provide these things.
  • The Boston Tea Party
  • After fighting The French and Indian War Britain needed money to pay off its debt. The Stamp Act said that the colonists would have to pay tax on printed papers. This news of this new tax made the colonists furious.
  • The Intolerable Acts
  • In 1770, the colonists were still angry that soldiers were living in their towns and cities. As time went on, the relationship between the colonists and the soldiers became worse. On March 5, 1770, the bad feelings in Boston erupted into violence. The colonists threw rocks and snowballs at the soldiers.
  • The colonists loved tea, but many refused to buy it from Britain. The colonists had to pay taxes on tea. Many spoke out against the law and refused to buy tea.
  • All colonists will pay tax for tea. We need more money for our debt!
  • Parliment decided to punish the colonists. Trade ships were forbidden to enter or leave the harbor until the lost tea was paid for. In September 1774, leaders from 12 colonies gathered in Philadelphia to discuss the problems with Britain.
  • We are deciding to punish you bad colonists!
