  • In this scene, Mayella is being questioned by Atticus and she slips by saying, "He does tollable, 'cept when--" (208) Then she trails off and doesn't finish her sentence.
  • Atticus is taking advantage of Mayella's slip, and pointing out that Mr. Ewell could have beaten her when he was drunk
  • Mayella hesitates in this scene to answer Atticus' question, "'When he's--riled, has he ever beaten you?' Mayella looked around, down at the court reporter, up at the judge. 'Answer the question, Miss Mayella, ' said Judge Taylor." (209)
