Thomas woke up not knowing where he is, surrounded by unfamiliar faces. He looked around and saw a huge Maze around the field of grass. One stepped out from the crowd and welcomed Thomas to his new home, "Welcome to the Glade."
Thomas doesn't remember anything, but only his name. A person, Alby, said that it was normal and happened to every boy here. Apparently, every month a new person shows up from the box. Thomas wanted answers, but no one gave him any. Alby said to just deal with it, like everyone else has done already. The brown haired boy, Newt, said that he has been there for 3 years. There are doors that lead to the Maze that opens in the morning and closes at night. Newt warns Thomas about the creatures named, Grievers that lurk around in the Maze.
One of the most important rules of the Glade is to never enter the Maze unless you were a Runner. The Runner runs into the Maze to solve it so everyone can escape. Thomas really wanted to be a Runner, but practically everyone said that the best had to be the Runner. One day, Alby and a Runner went to check out in the Maze if there was a Griever that was blocking the path that could lead to the exit. They both didn't come until the doors were about to close. Thomas rushed past the door to help, but now all three of them were now stuck in the Maze. Earlier, Alby was stung by a Griever and is now unconscious.
After spending the whole night being chased by Grievers, the three of them were the first people to survive a night in the Maze. Everything seemed alright until the first girl appeared. She claimed that her name was Teresa and she knows Thomas. Then something strange happened. The doors will not close at night anymore. Every night, Grievers will enter their home and capture a one person. With a group of people, Thomas finally solved the puzzle of the Maze using his knowledge about his escape from the Grievers. The only way out was through the Griever's home.
The people who were still there gathered weapons and joined Thomas to the Griever's home. There were 40 of them, but the morale was low. They defeated the Grievers miraculously, however, they lost over half of their people. There was a door that led to a lab full of scientists. The survivors stood there confused as a lady congratulated them on finding a way out of the Maze. Suddenly, a group of people that carried guns took out the scientists.
The group evacuated the survivors out of the building, promising that everything was going to be okay now. The survivors were brought to a bus and as they were sitting on the seats, they saw weird, insane people on the sidewalks. One of the people with the guns said, "You guys are safe, those scientists are not going to hurt you anymore." The driver of the bus took off with high speed, ignoring the unusual people on the street.
