  • "You are fettered . . . Tell me why?"
  • Jacob Marley's ghost shows up at Scrooges house. Scrooge is questioning about the ghost being real or fake. Marley explains that he is there to help Scrooge have a good afterlife. Marley tells Scrooge that because of his mistakes in life he has to wear that chain in the afterlife. The chain symbolizes Marley getting held back from going to heaven
  • "I wear the chain I forged in life . . . I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it."
  • Theme
  • The Ghost of Christmas past brings Scrooge to a scene in his past. Young Scrooge is alone at his school house at Christmastime. Then his sister runs in to bring him home. Fran Helping him makes Scrooge regret not helping his sister with her son. this supports the theme of the importance of our past.
  • I wish I helped take care of my nephew after Fran died.

  • The Ghost of Christmas past shows scrooge his old girl friend as a older women. he starts to feel regret for leaving her. This is a conflict for scrooge because he wishes that he had a big happy family.
  • Indirect Characterization
  • This indirectly shows that scrooge is cold, mean and does not like Christmas. He yells at the boy scaring him and makes him run away. Even though the boy is trying to spread Christmas cheer he still scares him away showing he does not like Christmas

  • The Ghost of Christmas present symbolizes Santa. He is merry and jolly just like Santa. He shows the happiness and joy of the Holidays. Also the Ghost looks like Santa with his white beard and big coat.

  • Scrooge only giving his clerk a candle and keeping his eye on the clerk indirectly shows that scrooge is mean and not trusting of his clerk. Their office is freezing cold and Scrooge only lets him have a candle to warm himself. Also scrooge does not let the clerk slack off even though it is Christmas Eve so he watches the clerk every move.
