  • Spies of the Civil War
  • Allen Pinkerton, Union Spy
  • What they were used for: Spies in the war were used to gain information from the other side to gain intelligence.
  • Belle Bloyd, Confederate spy
  • Spying took place from mid 1861- 1865 during the Civil War
  • Spying took place on a secret line from Washington to Richmond. They also spied 60 miles South of the Mason Dixon line
  • How: During this war, the role that women played as spies forever changed warfare. Never before had women taken such an active role.
  • Extra information: Harriet Tubman was also a spy for the U.S. Army. She was born into slavery and escaped using the Underground Railroad.
  • Why: We need to remember this because spying changed the tactics of warfare for the Civil War and many more wars to come.
  • One way that this information surprised me was that hundreds of women took roles as spies. The explanation for this is because people did not expect women to work such dangerous jobs.
  • Women will never work such dangerous jobs!
  • Ya`ll thought wrong!
  • It helped the nation because it layed down a foundation of tactics used in todays modern age
  • This information helps us understand how crucial information was obtained by both sides during the war.
