The Old Man and the Sea
Andrew Theroux Mrs. DiBiase, Mr. Williams C/G November 16th 2017 The Old Man and the Sea
The theme of The Old Man and the Sea is life is not easy even when one is determined.
“‘What’s that?’” she asked a waiter and pointed to the long backbone of the great fish that was now just garbage waiting to go out with the tide” (36). One could not identify the fish because of there was no fish left. The amount of determination he put in led to him being somewhat satisfied but, he wants to catch more fish and prove himself to the other fishermen or just live on with his life.
The authors purpose to write this is to entertain, because if someone was teaching how to fish they would use descriptive writing and more informative information. Since it is entertaining it does not have facts about news or things that have happened recently like the news.
The reason that the fishing pole represents the symbol of the authors purpose is since Hemingway liked fishing he wrote about how he liked fishing and how much of a struggle it can be sometimes, or how life can be a struggle like fishing.
Hemingway's intended audience was teens or young adults, the reason that is so he can let people know how life can be difficult, no matter the effort put towards the subject or how determined they are.
