  • Solid Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ), otherwise known as dry ice is very cold, so when it's exposed to the air, the air adds thermal energy to it causing it to change into carbon dioxide gas which is invisible. When dry ice is dropped into water, it adds additional thermal energy to the dry ice molecules to gain even more thermal energy. The molecules move faster and move further apart from each other due to the added thermal energy.
  • Dry ice is unique as it skips the liquid phase to go straight from a solid to a gas, a process called sublimation. The dry ice is so cold that it cools the water vapor in the air forming a cloud made up of tiny water droplets in the air with CO2 gas. The chemical composition of CO2 has not changed, proving that its a physical change.
