Storyboard Text

  • Katniss misses the simpler life she had before the games even though her family was poor and hungry.
  • Characterization "I mourn my old life here. We barely scraped by, but I knew where I fit in, I knew what my place was in the tightly interwoven fabric that was our life. I wish I could go back to it because, in retrospect, it seems so secure compared with now, when I am so rich and so famous and so hated by the authorities in the Capitol"(7).
  •
  • Symbolism "A mockingjay is a creature the Capitol never intended to exist. They hadn't counted on the highly controlled jabberjay having the brains to adapt to the wild, to pass on its genetic code, to thrive in a new form. They hadn't anticipated its will to live" (92).
  • The mokingjay symbolizes the revolution because it was one of the Capitols failures.
  • Imagery "Blue water. Pink Sky. White-hot sun beating down. All right, there's the Cornucopia, the shining gold metal horn, about forty yards away. At first it appears to be on a circular island, but on closer examination, I see the thin strips of land radiating off the circle like spokes on a wheel"(268).
  • The first time Katniss sees the arena.
  • Theme: sacrafice "There's something else I want from Haymitch. 'Okay, I figured out what i'm asking,' I say. 'If it is Peeta and I in the Games, this time we try to keep him alive'"(178).
  • Katniss asks Haymitch to help Peeta in the arena even though she knows only one person comes out and if she keeps Peeta alive, she kills herself.
  • foreshadowing "'There by the corner of the table. You can just...' says Wiress. Beetie squints under his glasses. 'Just make it out.' I stare in that direction, perplexed. But then I see it. A patch of space about six inches square at the corner of the table... 'A force field...' Beetie says... 'Chink,' says Wiress vaguely. 'In the armor, as it were,' finishes Beetie."(228-9).
  • Wiress and Beetie give Katniss information about how to see force fields, which will be important during the Games, but she doesn't know that yet.
