Wealthy and educated people should lead our country!
We must strictly follow the constitution!
During President Washington's election and presidency two political parties emerged. The two parties were the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans. Today the two parties are the Democrats and the Republicans.
The French will never win! Help the British!
No! We will remain neutral!
We need to help the French like we promised!
The two parties had different beliefs and supported different ideas. Alexander Hamilton led the federalist party. They believed that wealthy and educated people should lead our country, there should be a strong central government, a large national bank, a loose interpretation of the constitution, and tariffs. They also put an emphasis on manufacturing, shipping, and trade because they were from the north. And they supported the british
The Democratic republicans were led by Thomas Jefferson. They believed that people should have political power, there should be strong state governments, and strict interpretation of the constitution. They hated the idea of a National bank and tariffs. They also put an emphasis on agriculture because they were from the south. Finally, the Democratic Republicans supported the French.
The two political parties emerged when the violence in France begun. France and England were at war and America had to decide what to do. Alexander Hamilton thought the French Revolution would fail and that they should help the British, but Thomas Jefferson wanted to help the French like they said they would when they helped us.
