The Odyssey:Book 1: Athena Inspires the Prince
The story begins ten years after the end of the Trojan War. Odysseus is stranded on the island of Ogygia with the goddess, Calypso. She has fallen in love with him and will not let him go.
Meanwhile back at Odysseus' castle in Ithaca, a mob of suitors is devouring his estate and attempting to court his wife, Penelope. Prince Telemachus, his son, has failed to stop them and has lost all hope that his father may still be alive.
Telemachus has decided to let his mother choose her own fate and he leaves her with the suitors. Meanwhile, the Goddess Athena mysteriously appears in the form of Odysseus' old friend, Mentes.
Indeed I will. You’ve counseled me with so much kindness now, like a father to a son. I won’t forget a word.
Telemachus, you must make a journey to Pylos and Sparta and ask for news of your father.
Telemachus declares, "You suitors who plague my mother, you, you insolent, overweening ... for this evening let us dine and take our pleasure, no more shouting now. But I’ll cry out to the everlasting gods in hopes that Zeus will pay you back with a vengeance—all of you destroyed in my house while I go scot-free myself!"
Telemachus departs to his bedroom to ponder the journey ahead of him to find his father.
