  • WHAT?
  • Harry Truman, the 33rd U.S President addressed the Truman Doctrine.
  • On March 121997 in Washington D.C, U.S.A (to congress), he spoke out about the Truman Doctrine
  • The Truman Doctrine is a pronouncement made by President Harry Truman. He stated that the USA would adopt the policy of ‘Containment’, meaning that the US would have to send financial or military support to any country in threat of communism.
  • Turkey is located very strategically. It is right under the USSR which would allow them access to the Mediterranean Sea. This means there is a lot more resource to feed and use for the country. Turkey is also filled with oil.
  • WHY?
  • Greece, very close to Turkey also a very good place strategically. Rebel communist groups are supported in spirit by the USSR, but heavily aided financially by Tito in Yugoslavia.

  • Truman explained his pronouncement to congress, and congress responded to the messageby prompting $400000000 for this purpose.
