Tom suspects that Jay and Daisy, his wife are flirting with each other so he decides to go to NY with all of them
Gatsby tells Tom that Daisy never loved him, and he was trying to force Daisy with words to tell him that he never loved Tom so that he could believe him. At this moment, Gatsby was being selfish.

Daisy ran out and took Gatsby's car, Gatsby ran after her and got into the same car as her. As they were driving back home, Myrtle ran onto the street thinking Tom was driving, and Daisy ran her over. Nobody saw it was Daisy, but Gatsby. He took all the blame to protect her.
As Tom is waiting for a taxi at Tom mansion, he sees Gatsby hiding in the bushes hiding. He walks up to him and asks him what had happened, and he tells him the truth. Gatsby is shocked, he took the blame and told Nick that Daisy was driving. Accoridng to Gatsby, he tried to steer teh stirring wheel but it was to late.

Nick leaves Gatsby hiding in the bushes and goes home, Gatsby just stays their hiding until four in the morning, just to make sure that Tom doesn't do anything to Daisy.
