Storyboard Text

  • In the late 1400s, the Shono conquered the region between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers from Zimbabwe to the coast of Mozambique .
  • Like Great Zimbabwe, the Mutapa Empire thrived on the gold it mined and traded for goods from China and India
  • The Portuguese arrived and took over the coastal trade in the 1500s
  • They gradually gained control over the empire and forced its people to mine gold for them
  • In the late 1600s, Mutapa kings allied with the nearby Rozwi kingdom to drive out the Portuguese
  • Instead, the Rozwi conquered the Mutapa's territory and ruled it until the early 1800s, when it became part of the Zulu Empire
