Charlie the cat and Butkus the dog live with Jessica and Kyle Smith. Charlie came to the Smith's first but Butkus doesn't care. He wants to be King of the castle and hopes they get rid of Charlie. He does so by always playing with the children. Jessica begins to neglect Charlie and even forgets to feed him. Charlie is always tired and hungry because of this but Jessica calls him lazy. Butkus then has a change of heart since he realizes that being King of the castle is not all what it's cracked up to be. He feels alone and wants a friend. Charlie is not sure of Butkus' intention but in the end they become friends. The author Angelo Russo is a student at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary School
Lazy: Most would think it would mean just not wanting to do anything but Charlie wasn;t lazy he was just not fed enough so he was always tired and hungry. King of the Castle: All Butkus wanted to be was number one but as he finds out it can be lonely at the top.
