After President Monroe took office, it came to the American's attention that there was a revolution occurring right below them! The Latin Americans were revolting against Spanish rule!
The Latin Americans are rebelling right below us ... we better watch out in case somebody tries to take over Latin America and then invade us...
In 1810, Mexico, Venezuela, and Argentina all declared independence from Spain, and in 1821, Mexico won independence from Spain.
Hmm.. Spain won't let us trade with Latin America... but if they revolt and are free, they'll trade with us ... let's help Latin America with their revolutions
Britain also supported the revolutions in Latin America, but for their own reasons.
Other European countries were also interested in Latin America ... to conquer it. So, Britain asked the U.S. to join with it and send a message to the other countries to leave Latin America alone.
The battle of New Orleans was an unnecessary massacre. 7,000 British troops marched into battle and General Jackson met the troops with deadly fire. The Americans won, but the battle was unnecessary because the treaty of Ghent had been signed two weeks earlier.
So, the Battle of New Orleans was unnecessary because a peace treaty had already been signed, except news traveled very slowly, so nobody knew of it. Nobody really won the war of 1812, despite the great victory at New Orleans, but the war did have important effects.
Treaty of Ghent ~ended the war of 1812 ~weakened Indian resistance in the Northwest ~national pride surged ~two of the war's heroes would later become presidents ~British impressment of sailors faded away
