Storyboard Text

  • Introduction
  • Everybody is having fun in New Pretty City, and here I am all alone!
  • Trait #1: Daring
  • Because I'm breaking a major rule, and the text shows Peris and I have always been careful during "expeditions," meaning I've done this a bunch, this shows how daring I am.
  • Trait #2: Self Absorbed
  • Because I am so concerned about how I look, and the fact that I openly talk about how I "hate" one side of my face, this shows that I'm pretty self-absorbed and only care about my looks and being Pretty.
  • Meet Tally Youngblood the protagonist. She is an "Ugly," or a normal-looking person, waiting until her 16th birthday when she can undergo surgery to become a "Pretty." She is upset because she is the youngest in her class, meaning all her friends are already Pretties and live in New Pretty City.
  • Trait #3: Mischevious
  • Tally is pretty daring. I know this because she sneaks into New Pretty City, which Uglies are not allowed to do. The book states "Tally had no idea what would happen if she got caught. This wasn't like being busted for "forgetting" her ring...Everyone did that kind of stuff. But she and Peris had always been careful about not getting caught on these expeditions. Crossing the river was serious business" (7).
  • Changing Event: The Smoke
  • Tally is self-absorbed. She really shows this when her friend, Shay (a supporting character), and she mess around with holograms speculating what they could look like once they are Pretty. She asks Shay: "So, Shay, which do you think is your good side?" When Shay doesn't play along, Tally adds, "I hatemy right side. I always start with the left" (42).
  • Changing Event: The Pretty Surgery
  • Now that I am beautiful and Pretty, I am just going to party like everyone else and mind my own business.
  • Tally is a mischievous. We can see that when she and Shay decide to pick on the twelve year-olds coming to live at their dorm. Both Tally and Shay fake a fight in the library, which ends with Shay falling over the balcony towards the table where a bunch of the twelve year-olds are. Shay activatesher jacket, which serves as a bungee, and Tally and she laugh at the prank (80).
  • Because I prank people often, and this time I really scared a few kids, this shows how I'm mischievous!
  • One even that changed Tally was going to the Smoke. Tally went there to get Shay back after Shay skipped her Pretty surgery. At the Smoke, Tally meets David, the leader, and falls in love with him. Even though David is an Ugly, Tally starts to see how Ugly people can be pretty. As a result, she starts to be less self-absorbed and see her own natural beauty especially since David likes her as she is.
  • Tally's personality changes again as she and Shay, and many of the members of the Smoke are captured by the authorities and forced to undergo Pretty surgery. This changes Tally because the surgery actually changes people's minds to make them more complacent. In Tally's case, she complies to the rules and sees no need to stand up for herself or cause mischief.
