  • French Revolution Introduction
  • Factors that led to the Revolution
  • Meeting of the Estates General
  • The French citizens were upset for many reasons. From 1789-1799, they started to revolt and then started a revolution. They were greatly inspired by America and wanted to make their country independent and not have a king.
  • The Tennis Court Oath
  • A few of the factors that lead to the revolution were bread shortage, unfair taxation of the third estate, lack of taxes on the noble and clergy, etc.
  • The Storming of the Bastille
  • the estates general met for the first time in over one hundred years to vote on and hopefully solve the issues between the estates peacefully. Nobles wanted to keep their taxes limited and tax the third estate. The vote was unfair the nobles got the clergy on their side and the third estate was out voted 2 to 1.
  • The Great Fear
  • the third estate formed the National Assembly and got locked out of the Estates General meeting, so they broke into a tennis court in the palace and didn't leave until they had come up with their own "declaration of independence."
  • Many people consider this the starting point of the French revolution. The angry third estate stormed the Bastille (a French prison) looking for gunpowder for their guns.
  • soon after the storming of the Bastille, a rumor spread throughout the land that the king was hiring barbarians and outlaws to destroy the third estates. while all of this was going on, the peasants themselves became the outlaws. they were burning feudal documents ( documents that tied them to the estate system and rule of the king.) and destroying property in the process.
