  • Madame Loisel's thoughts are trained on lavish clothing and lifestyle. These are things she does not have, hence, she believes that she less desirable than the women of high nobility.  
  • She longed for an expensive house, clothes and jewels, but what she had was torn up couches and worn out curtains.
  • She envied those wealthier than her, people who lived expensive lifestyles. She looked at all her friends in that way, they lived better than her.
  • She was married to a man of low social status. He came back to the house to his wife looking distressed and a letter in his hand.
  • Madame Loisel’s husband is hopeful that the letter will bring joy to her, but instead she continues to be in distress.
  • In fear that she will not be able to dress and impress, she begins to cry. Her husband tries to console her.
