Lizabeth plays around with her friends in Miss Lottie's yard, throwing rocks and ripping out marigolds. Even though Lizabeth is having fun, she starts thinking that it may be childish.
Lizabeth overhears her parents talking, making her feel uncomfortable, having to deal with family problems while growing into adulthood.
Lizabeth runs out to Miss Lottie's yard in the early morning, and takes out all her stress, anger and emotions by ripping out Miss Lottie's marigolds. After this event does she realize that she as grown from childhood to adulthood.
