Atalanta's parents had abandoned her when she was a baby. A bear found her and raised her until she a a child. Then, one day, some hunters found her and taught Atalanta all they knew about hunting. She grew up to be a very good runner and hunter.
Wow!! That golden apple is sooo pretty!
She is so fast!!
One day she got invited to help kill a wild boar and that is what she did. The boar is was killed and Atalanta got very famous. Many men wanted to marry her. She came up with a challenge. Whoever could beat her, she would marry, but if she beat you then the you would die. Atalanta took lead of every race and won.
A man called Hippomenes challenged her to another race. Atalanta agreed but she had fallen in love with him. He went to ask Aphrodite for help. Aphrodite gave him some golden apples that no one could resist. He must throw them during the race so that he could catch up with Atalanta.
The race had started and Atalanta was already ahead! Hippomenes threw the first two apples and got a little ahead of Atalanta but she quickly caught up again. So he threw the third apple and again Atalanta got distracted so he took the lead and won the the race!!
Hippomenes and Atalanta soon got married. But Aphrodite was very angry with Hippomenes because he did not thank her in any way for her help! So she came up with a plan to punish the both of them.
One day the couple was out walking and they spotted a cave to rest at. They went inside the cave and rested not noticing it was the temple of Rhea. She got very angry when they used her temple as a resting place so she cursed them and they turned into lions.
