Storyboard Text

  • Here you go! um... Is there something you need to tell me?
  • Good Morning, Honey! Do you want some breakfast?
  • Not really...
  • Yes!
  • +          = THANKFUL!
  • Mom, may I go to Laura's house to play?
  • No, until you say the magic word.
  • MaryAnn´s mom, Claudia, is starting to notice that MaryAnn hasn’t learned to say “please” nor “thank you”. She is worried, because MaryAnn´s Grandma gets really snappy with the young children, when they forget their manners and they will soon have a thanksgiving dinner.
  • Please?...
  • Yey! Thank you, Mom!
  • Yes! Here is a chocolate for your good word!
  •    Claudia just had a great idea. She decided that every time MaryAnn says the magic words, she will reward her with a chocolate. This way, she is aping positive reinforcement on her. By giving her chocolate, MaryAnn’s like hood on practicing good manners will increase.
  • yes! There is your chocolate!
  • Mom, can you buy me a shirt? ...Please?
  • Claudia is starting to show her daughter, that every time she does not say “please” or “thank you” she will not listen to her. She also tells MaryAnn what she needs to do to make her mom listen to her.
  • Of course! You have great manners and I am very hay for that!
  • Grandma, may you please pass me the salad? Thank you!
  • Claudia uses chocolate, as a primary reinforcement, tocreate immediate reinforcement. MaryAnn realizes she needs to say "pleaseand thank you" her to be rewarded. Therefore, this situation is consideredan immediate reinforcement, because MaryAnn is starting to use good manners assoon as she figures out she is going be rewarded for it.
  • The technique Claudia is using is known as: continuousreinforcement. Every time MaryAnn responds the right way, in this case saying“please or thank you”, she will get rewarded. This way Claudia is making herdaughter practice for the future encounter with her Grandma.
  • After so many practices, MaryAnn has learned to say themagic words without receiving any reward. Claudia realizes that her once immediatereinforcement has turned into a delayed reinforcement. This is because the reinforcementappeared even though a long time has went through. Grandma ends up very happywith MaryAnn’s great manners.
